In a conversation with his friend and collaborator SZA in Harper's Bazaar, Kendrick Lamar discussed what 'Just Like Us' means to him.

I had been resisting sharing this, preferring not to look like I'm trying to be down with the kids whilst simultaneously being two years behind the curve. However, I just stumbled across his quote in draft and realised it's too good not to share.

It's me, he said. This is the kind of man I am.

He shares an incisive description of the power of values, and continues:

"He's a man who can recognize his mistakes and not be afraid to share the mistakes and can dig deep down into fear-based ideologies or experiences to be able to express them without feeling like he's less of a man."

"If I'm thinking of 'Not Like Us,' I'm thinking of me and whoever identifies with that."
